Emma Spillane just recently helped the Cork u16 Ladies Football team retain their All Ireland title against Dublin in Templemore. Emma lined out at corner back last Saturday and has firmly established her place as one of the stalwarts of the Cork full back line. She is a player of many qualities. She has the ability to defend, harass and block down her opponents while also being able to carry and work the ball out the field with superb confidence. In the All Ireland final most recently her work rate was unparalleled as she drove the Cork team forward from the full back line ably assisted by her fellow teammates. Emma stood out for her ability to turn the ball over and begin Corks counter attack with remarkable ease.
Emma has always stood out on the club front, however making the Cork U14 team in 2011 gave her the full recognition she deserved raising her profile within the county and beyond. Emma has won All Ireland titles at U14 level and twice at U16 level as well as three Munster titles at the same age levels. She also has an U14 All Ireland Blitz medal to her name. This is quite an outstanding roll of honour for such a young lady.
On the club front Emma has been a prominent member of the Junior, Minor and underage teams for a number of years now. In 2013 alone Emma won West Cork titles with the first Junior team and Minor team as well as captaining the U16 team to success. Not alone this but she also won the County League with the Junior 13 a side team. The commitment this entailed is the hallmark of Emma’s character as her contribution to every game and training session is beyond compare.
While Emma has very little time to spare between club and county she is also devoted to her school football team playing at all levels since entering first year in Coláiste Pobail Bheanntraí. She played a prominent role in the U14 A VEC County success in 2012 and last year reached the Munster Final with the U16 team. Emma is such a versatile player and is an asset in all areas of the pitch. She has played in all positions between club, school and county and is incredibly influential no matter where she is playing on the field.
Emma is an inspiration and a role model for all players in our club. She is a determined and dedicated young lady who constantly aspires to be even better. Emma is always on hand to encourage others to achieve the kinds of success she has had by giving of her time so freely including the clubs Easter and Summer camps in Bantry. Her attitude to the game both on and off the pitch is outstanding. Emma is one of the most influential players in the club as teammates look to her for leadership and experience. Her consistency is quite remarkable as she never fails to make an enormous impact on a game at every level. The future is extremely bright for Emma as her career continues to go from strength to strength. She sure is a name we are going to hear a lot in the years to come.
