St Vals edged out by Banner in epic Senior Munster Final
St Vals 1-12 Banner 1-13
Banner (Clare) claimed the Tesco Homegrown Senior Club Title after a titanic struggle to overcome a brave St Vals team in Kilmallock on Sat 19th of October.
A slow start by Vals which saw them trailing by 1-05 to 0-01 after the opening 10 minutes proved decisive as despite some heroic performances all over the field they were always the contest.
Clare intercounty star Niamh Ó Dea was in inspired form early on for the Banner girls notching 1-03 in the opening quarter as St Vals struggled to impose themselves on the game however the switch of Briege Corkery to the edge of the square helped to stem the tide for Vals as they began to get their own game going.
A goal from Captain Jean Lucey kickstarted the Vals fighback as they took the game to the Clare girls. With full forward Caoimhe Creedon proving a handful for the Banner defence Vals fought their way back into a free flowing contest to trail at half time by 1-07 to 1-05.
The second half continued in a similar vain with both teams giving it their all from the off. Vals keeper Jean O Sullivan pulled off a fine save to deny the Clare girls from the restart but two early points from the Banner stretched their lead to 4 points as the second half unfolded.
Vals refused to yield and three points from Caoimhe Creedon cut the lead to a single point.
With the game firmly in the melting pot the sides stood toe to toe swapping score for score with the finish line in sight.
A great point from Caoimhe Creedon tied the game on the stroke of full time but Banner substitute Kat Cahill broke Vals hearts with an injury time point to seal the victory for the Clare girls.
Well done to both teams on a great game of football and best of luck to Banner in their All Ireland campaign
